The latest Census data confirms it: Farm-to-school programs are thriving nationwide! Since the last Census in 2019, participation in these impactful initiatives has grown by an impressive 14%. In the 2022-2023 school year, 74% of all School Food Authorities (SFAs)—the organizations managing food service operations—engaged in at least one farm-to-school activity. That’s a huge leap toward creating healthier meals, stronger communities, and sustainable food systems.

So, what does this participation look like? The activities are as diverse as they are impactful:

  • Serving Local Foods (63%): From fresh fruits and vegetables to dairy and grains, local foods are making their way onto school menus, delighting students while supporting regional farmers.
  • Food Sourcing and Procurement (55%): Schools are increasingly prioritizing relationships with local farms, creating a win-win for nutrition programs and small-scale producers.
  • Agricultural Education and Gardens (49%): From school gardens to interactive classroom lessons, students are learning about where their food comes from and how it grows.
  • Local Food Promotion (45%): Creative campaigns, cafeteria tastings, and fun events highlight the value and flavor of local food, encouraging kids to make healthy choices.

This growth in farm to school activities is more than just a trend—it’s a movement that connects students to their food, supports the agricultural community, and fosters sustainable eating habits. It’s proof that when schools, farmers, and communities collaborate, everyone benefits.

At Harvesting Good, we’re proud to be part of this momentum. By partnering with schools and food service providers across New England, we’re ensuring fresh, local produce like our IQF broccoli makes its way to cafeteria tables year-round. Together, we’re nourishing minds, bodies, and the future of local agriculture. 💚
