Celebrate National Farm-to-School Month with Harvesting Good!
Melissa Motejunas, director of sales and marketing
Hey friends!
It’s October, and we’ve got two reasons to celebrate! Not only is it National Farm to School Month, but October 1st is National Broccoli Day—basically a holiday made for us at Harvesting Good. We’re raising our broccoli florets high to honor this delicious, nutritious, locally grown green veggie that’s powering school lunches and making waves in the farm-to-school movement.
Farm to School Month is all about connecting schools with local farms and filling lunch trays with fresh, healthy ingredients. With over 1.5 million servings of our broccoli in Boston Public Schools alone, we’re pretty excited to say that local sourcing is becoming the norm, not the exception. And we’re not stopping anytime soon—broccoli for all!
Here’s How You Can Get Your Broccoli Fix (All Month Long):
- Get Inspired: Check out the National Farm to School Network’s blog and social media for success stories featuring local heroes, such as broccoli fresh from farms and on lunch trays.
- Join the Fun: From harvest festivals to broccoli taste tests, find an event near you and celebrate the goodness of local food. No event near you? Why not host your own broccoli bash?
- Share the Love: Whether it’s a tray of perfectly steamed broccoli or a peek at your school’s veggie garden, post your farm-to-school moments with the hashtags #F2SMonth, #BroccoliDay, #FarmToSchool, #harvestinggood
- Join the Harvesting Good Local Pledge: This is more than a campaign; it’s a journey we’re embarking on together—a journey towards healthier kids, stronger communities, and a thriving local agriculture scene. Let’s make history, one broccoli floret at a time! Pledge Local with Us!
- Enter the Sweepstakes: Don’t forget to enter the Farm to School Month sweepstakes for a chance to win fun prizes!
Why This Month (and Broccoli!) Matters:
Farm to School Month isn’t just about the food on our plates—it’s about teaching students where their food comes from and supporting local farmers. Programs like ours are making sure that every tray is filled with healthy, local ingredients, like our beloved broccoli. When we work together to support local farms, we create healthier kids, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future.
So this October, whether you’re celebrating Broccoli Day or the entire month, remember that every bite of local food counts. Let’s keep this movement growing!
